We are currently accepting abstracts and proposals on any urban studies theme from (a) researchers who would like to present their work, (b) those who would like to organise themed sessions or panels, and (c) those who would like to organise exhibitions, book launches and other special events (creative approaches are especially welcome).

Template for submitting normal paper presentations that are not part of a themed session proposal.
  • Include 5 key terms in the space provided to assist programme design. Where appropriate use terms listed in the conference call.
  • Create additional rows as required if there are more than 3 presenters for this paper.

Template for proposing a session consisting of a group of papers on a specific theme (e.g. from an existing research group or as a result of a call circulated by the organiser). Normally a themed session would consist of 3-4 papers. If there are more than 4 papers, then there may be two or more sessions devoted to the theme.
  • Please include a title for the themed session, as well as titles and abstracts for each of the papers that will form part of the session.
  • Create additional rows as required if there are more than 4 papers in the proposed session.
  • Create additional rows as required if there are more than 3 organisers for the session, and/or presenters for each paper.

A panel consists of 3-4 speakers who address a common theme through short format presentations or remarks rather than full conference papers. This format is useful for debates and conversations and can be proposed by anyone intending to participate in the conference.
  • Create additional rows as required if there are more than 4 speakers in the panel.
  • The organiser can name themselves as either chair or a speaker, or neither.

Template for proposing an event at the conference, for example, a book launch, exhibition, or any other event. These events will normally be organised by those proposing them, although conference organisers will attempt to provide space if it is required and list the event in the programme.

The SA City Studies network is organizing its fourth writing workshop, which will be held at Wits University in Johannesburg on 28 & 29 August 2020, immediately preceding the City Studies Conference at Wits, from 30 August to 1 September 2020. We invite scholars who are doctoral candidates (or within five years post PhD) registered or based in an academic department or an institute at a Southern African university, and participating in the City Studies Conference, to apply to participate in the Workshop, which will focus on supporting the development of scholarly academic journal publishing.
